BREAKING THE BAKCBOARD

BREAKING THE BACKBOARD is a creative anomaly directed by choreographer Marinette Dozeville and visual artist Frédéric Xavier Liver, devised in 2020 with the Sainte-Savine Panthers (FR). It is a dance performance created using the terms, gestures, gameplay and movements of basketball. With no competition, no matches, no baskets, not even a ball, this choreographic visual interpretation is borne by the physical commitment of the players. The performance illustrates a real fusion of the sporting and artistic disciplines, while finding common ground between dance and basketball audiences, as well as the team’s fans!

In addition to the artistic programme, and so as not to deprive regular users of playing on the Mehdi Boudda basketball court at Place du Nouveau Marché aux Grains, a 3×3 tournament was also held. Organised by Promo-Jeunes, a non-profit organisation, the tournament took place between each performance of BREAKING THE BACKBOARD, encouraging both sports fans and dance enthusiasts to attend the event.

Rehearsal the day before Art+People by nuitblanche at the Fontainas sports hall

For nuitblanche.lab and the Art+People by nuitblanche event, Marinette Dozeville and Frédéric Xavier Liver worked with Noémie, Yana, Léa, Fanette, Eva, Safia, Sarah, Astou and Soukaïna, who all play for Ganshoren Dames Basket and Anna, former player for the Royal IV Brussels. This was a first for the company, which usually works with an entire team coordinated by the coach during the players’ usual training sessions. In this case, the players play for different teams and have different training schedules. The choreography was made possible thanks to each player’s investment and mutual trust. This is the first time the artists were able to experience performing the choreography at night.
